His best-known work is the on-going series, the Malazan Book of the Fallen. A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen is a fantasy series written by Canadian author Steven Erikson, consisting of seven books as of 2007 and projected to be ten books long in total. It is an epic fantasy, wide in scope and encompassing the stories of a very large cast of characters. Each book tells a different chapter in the ongoing saga of the Malazan Empire and its wars. For the first five books, each volume is self-contained, in that the primary conflict of each novel is resolved within that novel. However, many underlying characters and events are interwoven throughout the works of the series, binding it together. The Malazan world was co-created by Erikson and Ian Cameron Esslemont, who published Night of Knives, set in the same world, in 2005. The Malazan series is often compared both to Glen Cook's Black Company, and George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. The seventh book in the series is also dedicated to Glen Cook. Gardens of the Moon is the first novel in Canadian author Steven Erikson's epic fantasy series, the Malazan Book of the Fallen. There are ten books planned for this sequence. The novel was first published in the United Kingdom on 1 April 1999 as a trade paperback, with a mass-market paperback edition following on 16 March 2000. The novel was published in hardback in the United States in June 2004, with a mass-market paperback edition following in January 2005. Plot introduction The sequence details the various struggles for power on a world dominated by the Malazan Empire. It is notable for its grittiness, high and inventive use of magic, and its unusual plot structure. The series is not told in a linear fashion and indeed it is possible to 'enter' the series by reading either Gardens of the Moon, Deadhouse Gates (the second volume published) or Midnight Tides (the fifth volume published) first. However, it is generally accepted that the order of publication is the most efficient way of following the story. Deadhouse Gates is the second novel in Canadian author Steven Erikson's epic fantasy series, the Malazan Book of the Fallen. Plot introduction Deadhouse Gates opens a few months after the events of Gardens of the Moon and takes place simultaneously with events in Memories of Ice.Unlike the previous book, which followed different groups of characters in close proximity to one another, the character threads in Deadhouse Gates are frequently separated by hundreds or thousands of miles at a time. The Malazan Empire is rocked by a cull of the nobility, many being sent to the mines of Otataral Island off the coast of the subcontinent of Seven Cities. However, Seven Cities is being consumed by a rebellion known as the Whirlwind, led by the prophetess Sha'ik from the Holy Desert of Raraku. With the cities being overrun, the Malazan forces in the city of Hissar plot a daring evacuation overland to the Malazan continental capital of Aren. The Malazan 7th Army, under the command of the legendary Coltaine of the Crow Clan of the Wickans, is tasked with escorting 50,000 refugees some 1,500 miles
