Description: This encyclopedia introduces modern Palestinian history and society, beginning with the late Ottoman era and the brief Egyptian occupation of Palestine (1831-1840). Among the 400 entries presented by Mattar (affiliated with the United States Institute of Peace, and the Palestinian American Research Center) are new entries on events and personalities that have emerged since the first edition was published in 2000, bringing coverage up to early 2005. Some one-third of the entries consist of biographies, while others cover events, historical documents, organizations, and concepts. One of the valuable aspects is inclusion of relatively detailed maps, allowing for understanding of debates over settlements, refugees, borders, and so-called "security barriers." The contributors are Western, Israeli, and Palestinian scholars whom Mattar feels have for the most part avoided partisan narratives, figures such as Neil Caplan, Deborah Gerner, Rashid Khalidi, and Salim Tamari. Included in appendices are an annotated bibliography and 50 key documents, various United Nations Security Council resolutions, "peace plans" from the United States and others, and Palestinian Liberation Organization political programs.
